About MPEG-4 Digital Video Recorders
MPEG-4 DVRs are like H.264 DVRs, except the software, not the hardware, does the encoding. because they do not require as sophisticated hardware components, MPEG-4 DVRs very are often less expensive than H.264 DVRs.
A MPEG-4 DVR has 24 parts. Only the parts having to do with the resolution will be discussed here. A MPEG-4 CCTV DVR's main benefits has to do with it's Systems which synchronizes video and audio and removes errors. Secondly, because MPEG-4 uses advance video codecs this means that the video has same quality as H.264 DVRs. However, becuase H.264 DVR use hardware to process the video and MPEG-4 DVRs use both hardware and software a H.264 DVR is a much stable device and does not use as much of the main computer's processing power.
The reason to go with a MPEG-4 DVR has to do with budget. MPEG-4 DVRs are sufficiently good for most security camera systems, and although H.264 DVRs have better technology, most people don't use their additional processing power.
MPEG-4 DVRs are generally Standalone DVRS
Because MPEG-4 DVRs use both hardware and software to generate the security camera video, they are better suited for standalone DVRs. Integrating them into PC-Based DVRs can be cumbersome and slow down the PC. We suggest going with a standalone unit if you want a MPEG-4 DVR.
